Too Late For Goodbyes
March 14, 2008What was your first favorite song? I was talking last night with some people about this, people who said they couldn’t remember having a favorite song at age 4, but I vividly remember mine: “Too Late For Goodbyes” by Julian Lennon.
I can clearly remember getting excited every time I heard it on the radio. That was before I understood that radio played the same songs over and over and over. The only other song I can clearly remember from that era is Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”
I thought it was a man singing.
Anyway, my conversation last night got me thinking about Julian Lennon and that song, so I looked it up on youtube. Sure enough, there was a “live” performance (lip-synced) that’s of pretty questionable quality.
My 2008 assessment: Still a pretty cool song, although Julian looks like a real wet end. Toward the end, some of the instrumentation gets pretty hilarious, especially the bass with its attempts at funkiness. He looks and sounds just like his father, which is what I imagine made this a hit in 1984.
Anyway, enjoy:
Oh really? My favorite song back in ‘84 was “Joyride” by Government Issue. But Julian Lennon is cool too, I guess. I didn’t listen to the radio back then.
That actually reminds me that during the discussion I referenced, the person I was talking to asked what kind of music I listened to when I was 4 and intimated that it was probably the underground or “indie” version of kids’ stuff like Raffi or whatever.
Since I am nothing if not a music snob, I could only respond with a heavy-hearted touche“.
“Tell her about it” by Billy Joel (go figure). I liked the video when I was kid, and I was obviously a fan of the piano man.
Hhmm — not sure if this is really my “first” favorite song or not, but it’s the one I remember most from the time I was in about the 5th or 6th grade: “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies!!! I had the single of it and it had a skip in the record when I would play it on my portable record player. My girlfriends and I would play it in the back yard and it would strategically skip at one of the choruses and instead of singing “Oh, Sugar…Ah, Honey, Honey…” it would go “Oh, Shi….Oh, Shi….Oh, Shi….” and sound like it was saying the bad word for poop as many times as we would let the skip stay stuck!!! ha-ha-ha We would laugh and laugh and laugh over it!!! Even without that fun surrounding it, I did really like the song and it was one of my favorites!
I posted the video and lyrics for Sugar Sugar on my blog – if you’re curious!!! http://kim-in-sanford.blogspot.com
I DO REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE ABOUT TWO AND YOUR FAVORITE SONG WAS “HOW MUCH IS THAT DOGGY IN THE WINDOW”

Well, I guess we were meant to be. My first favorite song was “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel. And, like Gordon, I remember getting insanely excited when it would come on the radio.
I actually get just as excited today, because I remember how much I loved that song!
“Take on Me” by A-Ha.

It’s still good.

Ray Stevens and probably something by DeBarge were all my ears could handle at that age. I have since never like music. Just doesn’t sound right to me.
When I was about 4, this song called “Here Come The Big Guitars.” No idea who it was by, some obscure 80s band probably, but it had this killer guitar riff in the middle that was just awesome to headbang and play air guitar to. Can’t stop those 4-year-olds from rocking out, man.
My latest blog was about Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” I did a little reading about the controversial director, who also made “The Getaway,” and I read that his last work was this video. Sam Peckinpah was hired to direct two videos for Julian Lennon, which he did before he croaked.
You see how it all comes back around?
The Wild Bunch is a good movie. I watched it with your dad the last time I was up in Indianapolis. The Julian Lennon video lacked the slow motion shots Peckinpah was known for, however. And the gun violence. Maybe he should have directed an Ice Cube video.
